The mainstream ancient Indian philosophy includes six systems (ṣaḍdarśana) –Sankhya, Yoga, Nyaya, Vaisheshika, Mimamsa and Vedanta, referred in the Vedas- dated back to 5000 BC.
The Sanskrit noun yoga translates to (and is cognate with) English "yoke". It is derived from the root yuj "to attach, join, harness, yoke". The ultimate goal of Yoga is moksha (liberation)
The ultimate goal of Yoga is to experience the Truth, by realizing the true nature of our ‘Self’ and the Universe, to free ourself from the cause and effect impacts of Karma, which finally takes us to the life on Earth.
